Vanity

Vanity is the need to be told what one is, whether or not the story ever corrects it. A queen has her husband conquer the neighbouring islands so that their princesses must come and call her the most beautiful woman in the world, and a darning-needle takes every reverse as fresh evidence of its own fineness.
