A promise evaded
A promise evaded is a bargain whose maker never means to pay. Each time the condition is met a new one appears: a king offers his throne to whichever son brings back the finest little dog, and when one does, he asks for a cloth fine enough to pass through a needle's eye, and then for a bride.
