Cruelty punished
The tale's verdict on whoever was cruel in it, and it usually arrives in a single sentence after everything else has been settled: the false bride asked what such a woman deserves, who names her own punishment without recognising the case; the stepmother whose end is reported and not dwelt on. That the reckoning comes matters more to these tales than what it is.
