Bear
A bear does something the plot needs. In the war of the wolf and the fox he is the lookout, his three reports are the tale's one joke about the army, and his fall out of the oak kills the wolf and ends the war. In Snow-white and Rose-red he is a prince under a bear's skin who spends the winter by a widow's fire.
